Children (6~12yrs)

  • Stay with your children and tell them they are safe with light physical contact when they are anxious.
  • Listen to what children are saying and talk to them about what is happening in a way that they can understand. Avoid details that would scare them.
  • It is because of stress that the children are sick often (headache, abdominal pain) even though they are not sick. Warm their body and encourage them to take a deep breath or massage to relax.
  • When anxious, children can regress without doing what they normally do. Do not scold your children, just encourage them.
  • Disaster-related news is also stressful for children with anxiety. Prevent children from viewing television news.
  • Let the children play together.
  • Try to lead a regular life as usual and avoid activities that simulate too much your children.

Adolescents (12~18yrs)

  • Spend time together and pay attention to them.
  • Set clear rules and promises and let them have a regular life.
  • Give them enough information about the current situation and give them a chance to ask questions.
  • Talk about how to cope with disaster or other traumatic events and support them to make a realistic plan.
  • Allow adequate time for them to grieve, and do not expect too much of them to endure.
  • Allow them to talk about their feelings if they want and listen to them without judgment.
  • They may better cope with disaster by helping others. Encourage these activities.
